Autism and ADHD Assessment

A neurodivergent-affirming service for high-masking adults

We offer Autism and combined Autism and ADHD assessments both in-person and online via telehealth video.

Blackbird Psychology specialises in providing Autism assessments for high-masking (formerly known as high-functioning) presentations for adults over the age of 18. We also offer combined assessment for both Autism and ADHD.

Our neurodivergent-affirming Autism assessment and diagnosis is in accordance with national guidelines utilising a modified version of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) and a clinical interview tailored for high-masking individuals. ADHD assessment includes the administration, analysis and reporting of additional ADHD screening and diagnostic tools, including the DIVA-5.

At Blackbird Psychology we understand psychological assessment can be a deeply personal and emotional experience.

  • Autism and ADHD assessments can often be inaccessible for people. We try to improve the accessibility of our assessments by:

    • Offering an initial consultation process where you are screened for both Autism and ADHD and can discuss your personal experience with a trained clinician, prior to financially committing to a full assessment.

    • Enabling you to have up to 6 months from your initial consultation to decide whether to proceed with the full assessment.

    • Offering nationwide assessment via telehealth where you do not need to physically attend our offices.

  • Society’s understanding of Autism and ADHD is rapidly improving and the way in which these conditions are assessed is changing. We ensure best practice at our clinic by:

    • Basing our assessment practices on the latest research by world leading experts including Professor Tony Attwood and Dr Michelle Garnett.

    • Ensuring all of our assessment clinicians are versed in high masking (formerly high-functioning) and internalised presentations of Autism and ADHD.

    • Using a combination of assessment tools, both established and Gold-Standard, as well as ones developed based on recent research.

  • The full report is suitable for use in applications for government financial support (Centrelink, NDIS etc.) or for legal purposes. The report will be delivered via a feedback session with one of your assessors where you will have the opportunity to ask any questions and discuss support and treatment recommendations.

  • The are multiple pathways to assessment and diagnosis and countless different supports available post-assessment. We ensure our assessments lead to positive outcomes by:

    • Providing a comprehensive, detailed and accurate report that truly reflects your unique circumstances and experiences.

    • Ensuring all of our reports are valid for seeking supports with educational institutions, workplaces and, depending on the diagnostic outcome, valid for use with the NDIS, Centrelink and other official bodies.

    • Providing a list of neurodivergent affirming medical or support providers that suit your circumstances and needs.

We aim to deliver assessments that are:

  • A one hour appointment where you will be screened by one of our trained clinicians to confirm whether Autism or ADHD may be indicated and whether a full assessment is required. The clinician will be able to answer any questions you may have about the assessment process. After the initial consultation you will have the opportunity to book in for a full assessment. Initial consultations can be booked online here.

Note: if you already have an ADHD diagnosis you will still be asked to complete ADHD screening questionnaires as it provides your clinician critical information as to how your ADHD traits may manifest in order to more accurately determine the presence of Autistic traits.

  • Two appointments totaling up to 3 hours (or three appointments totaling up to 4 hours for combined assessment) and an online questionnaire to complete. The Assessment will be performed by both a clinical psychologist and other therapists under their supervision with specific Autism and ADHD assessment training.

  • The full report is suitable for use in applications for government financial support (Centrelink, NDIS etc.) or for legal purposes. The report will be delivered via a feedback session with one of your assessors where you will have the opportunity to ask any questions and discuss support and treatment recommendations.
